Laughing in the Dark

by Chondra Pierce

The most hilarious female comedian shares an honest look at her crash into depression. She describes her world as a gray hotel where she encountered hopelessness.

Rehearse in the dark what you learned in the light

Symptoms of depression are feeling sad, change in appetite, change in weight, excess fatigue or sleeping, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, morbid thoughts or thoughts of suicide. If you have at least 5 symptoms that last more than two weeks, see a doctor or counselor.

Christians are not immune to depression and taking medication is sometimes necessary. When chastised for having weak faith, Chonda quipped, "Why don't you take off your glasses and drive home?"

If someone you love suffers with depression, don't try to fix them, just be with them, support them and pray for them. Don't be a know-it-all like Job's friends.

Chonda had two friends who were her "Martha" - get things done, and her "Mary" - just let me cry with you. One of her friends read the Psalms out loud to her as part of her healing. David, along with Elijah and Job, understood despair.

Psalm 42
